چکیده
Following a neo-structuralist perspective, this study presents development puzzle for Latin American countries (LACs): triangular relation amongst peripherality (increased terms-of-trade volatility and technological backwardness), income inequality, per-capita income. We employ simultaneous equation model using three-stage least squares (3SLS) to analyse relation. find that decrease in inequality an increase were mutually reinforcing 14 LACs between 1995 2014. Although progress increases income, it partly mitigates by increasing inequality. Additionally, the effects of foreign sources technology, including direct investment (FDI), on are mitigated with higher capabilities. While improvement commodity expectedly decreases South countries, their is mostly insignificant.

Income Convergence toward USA: New Evidences for Latin and South American Countries
Abstract In this paper we test two versions of convergence hypothesis namely deterministic or conditional convergence and stochastic or catching up hypothesis using Carrion-i-Silvestre et al. (2005) stationary test. The results show Latin and South American countries (LSA) catching up process toward the USA failed in 1980s and somewhat in 1990s. But in 2000s most of them could lie in converge...
متن کاملLatin American economic development
This article examines the strategies, successes and failures of economic development in Latin America since 1870. We divide the analysis into four key development phases: primary export-led growth (1870–1929), import substitution industrialisation (1945–82), debt crisis (1980s) and the Washington Consensus (1990s). We demonstrate progress on many fronts, but underscore two key challenges for th...
متن کاملThe Effect of Social Spending on Income Inequality: An Analysis for Latin American Countries
Using a panel dataset from 1980 to 2000 this paper analyzes the determinants of income inequality in Latin American countries with special attention paid to education, health, and social security expenditures. I build on previous research by solving for the endogeneity of the social spending variables in the income inequality equation. This study undertakes 2SLS and GMM methods in order to cont...
متن کاملPeripherality, income inequality, and life expectancy: revisiting the income inequality hypothesis.
BACKGROUND Recent criticisms of the income inequality and health hypothesis have stressed the lack of consistent significant evidence for the stronger effects of income inequality among rich countries. Despite such criticisms, little attention has been devoted to the income-based criteria underlying the stratification of countries into rich/poor groups and whether trade patterns and world-syste...
متن کاملDoes natural resource abundance increase Latin American income inequality ? 1
Why is income inequality higher in Latin America than in East Asia? Is this phenomenon related to the region’s natural resource abundance? Is it a contributor to Latin America’s slow and narrowly focused human capital accumulation? If so, can anything be done to reverse the Latin American trends, or should we think of the region’s fate as unalterable? To help answer these questions, this paper ...
